Chapter Ten

ONCE LOGAN, RYLAND, and Phelan entered the office, Brock closed the wooden door, then lowered the white aluminum blind to cover the glass panel and prevent unwanted attention from the outside hallway. He sauntered behind the desk that swallowed up half the space in the small room, then plopped his large body into the chair, causing the joints to creak.

“What did you find out?” He directed his attention to Logan, who was sitting next to Ryland in one of the two chairs on the opposite side of the desk.

“Enough to know we have a serious problem but not enough to explain why,” Logan said, the strain wearing on his features.

Phelan had chosen to stand and was perched on the edge of a lateral filing cabinet with a side view of all three men. He stared at the syringe in his hand and frowned. Tessa was definitely a distraction. It wasn’t like him to overlook important details. After he’d gone in pursuit the twins and returned to her room, he’d been so preoccupied with Tessa he’d completely forgotten about the syringe.

While he waited for Logan to fill in Brock about the jackals, he studied the glowing green liquid. What little information they had so far wasn’t nearly enough as far as he was concerned. Since there were several shifter-owned hotels in Vegas, Phelan didn’t believe it was a coincidence Draven had shown up at the Fox and Hound. It bothered him that they still had no idea what the jackal was after and why he might be targeting the Kerns.

As soon as there was a pause in the conversation, Phelan glanced at Ryland and asked, “Do you think there’s a connection between this...” He held up the syringe. “And the woman we found near Woodland Acres?” He glanced at Brock and raised a brow, daring him to bark at him for disobeying the order not to show up at the crime scene. The bear shot him a reproachful glare but remained silent. Either Logan had fulfilled his promise and talked to his boss, or the man was waiting to yell at Phelan once he got him alone.

“Marina did mention a strange green tint to the woman’s skin,” Ryland said.

“Did she have any idea what caused it?” Brock shoved aside a stack of files and propped his elbows on the desk.

“No, she said we’d have to wait until they got the results from the examiner.” Phelan was afraid it might be a couple days before they got their answer, which wouldn’t be soon enough to help them with the Nira situation. “Maybe Ryland can give her a call and see if she can expedite the process.” Phelan, thankful his partner couldn’t reach him, chuckled when he shifted uncomfortably in his seat and furiously glared at him.

“That’s a good idea. Let me know what you find out.” Brock was either oblivious to Ryland’s reaction or he knew something about his history with Marina and wanted to screw with him.

Even though Phelan imagined
